Futari ya Ndizi/ Green Banana Futari
October 8th, 2007
I love cooked green bananas. There are many varieties of recipes that use green bananas in Tanzania. Cooked green bananas are staple food in Bukoba, Moshi and Kigoma region.
Most people in Tanzania associates the word futari with Ramadan. It could be because futari recipes have one common ingredient; and that is coconut. Since coast, coconut and Islam all go together in Tanzania, I can only guess that, this is the reason why futari recipes, are thought to be Ramadan recipes.
Please do not use plantain for this recipe. Green bananas and plantain are two different things.

Hi Miriam,
I didn’t know you could eat green bananas. I may have to try this recipe.
I sent my sister a link to your site, and she wanted to try one of your recipes that very day. Here’s the result.

Hujambo Miriam, I found your site by accident. Mke wangu anatoka Dar es Salaam. (Kinodoni). I am going to surprise my wife by making some vitumbua. When I went with my wife to Tanzania in 2006, I was served vitumbua every morning for breakfast. I was also served mandazi. Both were very delicious. Asante sana for posting the recipes. Salaama

Adam,
By now you must have surprised your wife with vitumbua. How was it? Many people don’t get it right the first time, or even second.
