The original Toll House Cookie recipe was created by Ruth Graves Wakefield in the 1930s. The recipe was first published in a Boston newspaper and later in Wakefield's cookbook, Toll House Tried and True Recipes. The recipe calls for chocolate chips to be added to the cookie dough, which Wakefield is credited with inventing.

 ½ c BUTTER
 ½ ts BAKING SODA
 6 tb SUGAR
 1 1/8 c FLOUR, SIFTED
 6 tb BROWN SUGAR
 ½ ts SALT
 ½ ts VANILLA
 ½ c CHOPPED NUT MEATS
 1 ea EGG, BEATEN SLIGHTLY
 6 oz CHOCOLATE CHIPS

BLEND BUTTER, SUGARS, AND VANILLA; ADD BEATEN EGG.

MIX TOGETHER FLOUR,SODA AND SALT.

ADD TO BUTTER MIX.

ADD A FEW DROPS OF HOT WATER.

MIX UNTILWELL BLENDED.

STIR IN CHIPS AND NUTS.

DROP BY 1/2 TEASPOONSFUL ONTOGREASED COOKIE SHEET.

BAKE AT 350 DEG F FOR 10 TO 12 MINUTES.
